Renegade for a Day...

I can't begin to express what fun it was taking my eldest daughter with me to spend a day with the Renegades. For my little ones, spending time with the Renegades often means having to sacrifice time with them. It's a huge sacrifice... I love spending time with the little tykes... so getting a rare opportunity to bring one of them along for a performance is a wonderful treat. My sweet girl did GREAT! She got to help carry the banner way up in the front of the corps, got scared by some fire crackers, and got to spend the evening at the post parade party with all the grownups. She said it was some of the most fun she's had!

...and no...that's not a giant blue bow (or anything else like it) on my head. LOL! 's a coat resting on a wagon in the background but with the darkness it certainly made me go 'o.O' LOL!

*scrapbooking Chinese New Year*

The best thing about parades, are the smiles. Along the route, the crowd's smiling... then later, as we relax and enjoy an evening doing what we all love to do (performing), we share in the laughter and enjoyment of the magic we've created...

This is just one of the many many pictures taken by myself and another intreped Renegade. :D As time permits... I'll post more of them so that one and all may share in the fun we all had at the Post Chinese New Year party. LOL... great times!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

What a GREAT Chinese New Year parade weekend! Wow! Quite excellent day! A big thanks to all our friends from across the nation that joined us! We did drum corps proud!

And a big thanks to the many folks who contributed to this year's big success including Lani, who's glitterly thing-a-ma-bobs made us stars under the lights, the souvie folks who set up the whole Renegades store on Treasure Island, Dave and his great hotel deal, Anne and her enthusiastic email skills, Johanna and her endless energy making Chevy's happen, the Chinese Parade folks who welcomed us into their spectacular event and a slew of others.

Mission accomplished! Gung Hay Fat Choy!

We have lots of photos and stories from the weekend coming. Of course, Trill-master Rob Brown's parade photos are the first to hit! PS: When is this guy going to actually march on the field with us?

Check this blog over the next few days for more parade goodies!!

See you between the cable car tracks,

- Greg

Checkpoint Alpha

I kept pictures from the early days with the corps because Lee told me one day they'd be funny to look at, but I had no idea how soon "one day" would be. If your exposure to the Renegades began circa DCA 2002, you will probably be surprised to see how small and...uh..."un-evil" the corps looked in the beginning.

When I look back at photos like this, taken in 1998, it seems like just yesterday, but also a lifetime ago. Nobody outside the organization thought senior corps stood much of a chance of catching on in California, but we didn't care. We didn't know what we were doing, but we knew if we kept it up one day this drum corps might really be something. Something worth all the hours of practice we put into it, and something that deserved its place on the same field with the junior corps we marched in a few years earlier (OK, a lot of years earlier for some of us).

Early in the corps development, I worked with the Board to put together a plan with some pretty lofty goals. Goal #1 was to join DCI and put a full show - including drill - on the field within five years. We beat that goal by two years when our show, unofficially titled "The Music of Every Drum Corps Ever Disqualified by DCI", hit the field the summer of 2000. By the end of the five-year plan, the corps was taking the field in Scranton, PA for the 2002 DCA Championships...something I don't think the original Board would have dreamed up in our craziest moment.

It's unbelievable to think how far the Renegades have come in such a short time. From seven musicians practicing in an indoor rifle range, to these crazy loud rock stars taking their place on senior corps' biggest stage. Drum corps, they grow up so fast....

Red Shirts!!!

It's here!!!!

It's here, it's here, it's here!!! My red shirt for CNY (Chinese New Year) is finally here! In fact... it's here a good five days BEFORE Amazon.com said I should expect it so I feel quite rewarded in my purchase. It was a great bargain, fits well and will look GREAT!

AND................................

I found out today that my eldest daughter gets to go to the parade WITH ME!!!!! WOOHOO! L* gets to hang out with the Renegades for a day! WOOOOOOOOT!!!

paradiddle, paradiddle, paradiddle, diddle

It's only February and already drum speak has taken over my mind. In between camps that's pretty much what I've been doing-practicing, practicing and yes, practicing some more. This is my first year playing bass drum and I've got a long way to go to make the line. Even though I've been told I'm in, I want to feel that I've earned the spot. I guess it's like most things in life you achieve-you crave that feeling of accomplishment. Kind of like learning a show in the winter and come Labor Day weekend you look back and go holy cow, look how far we came!! Tonight I'm at work killing time and one of my friends says to me you're walking around aimlessly with something on your mind. I said I know, I'm practicing. He just smiles and says o.k. Yeah, it may have looked strange, but I didn't care I have drum speak on the brain!

Loud IS Good!

So... I was at my son's school the other day to pick the little man up. Who should I see in the parking lot, but one of mom's best friends, a very conservative lady. She was just pulling in with a friend to pick up her son. We chatted briefly as her friend left and she glanced at my shirt then said laughing.

"My friend saw your shirt and said, 'wow...now there's a shirt you'd NEVER wear.'"

*dies*

I looked down at my shirt...Loud is Good prominantly displayed across the front of my jet black Renegades jersey.

"Well then... she just doesn't get it." I replied.

LOL... Loud IS good!

mwahahahaaaa!

Camp!! Camp!! Camp!! Camp!!

Guess what I'm doing this weekend??? *bounce, bounce*

Well, of course i'm spending another long weekend with the Renegades, but it does fly by so fast! More music is heading our way, as we're still pounding through the stuff we played through 3 weeks ago. Has it really only been 3 weeks?!?!?

Then SUPER BOWL PARTY on Sunday!! Whoohoo! Who will win? I dunno!! Who cares? There's beer!!

And next weekend, the Chinese New Year's Day Parade is upon us! We have wannabe "Renegades for a Day" coming out from across the U.S. just to come hang out with us!! How Cool is that? Cats are coming all the way out from Maine, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Las Vegas!! I know I can't wait to meet everyone ... it should definitely be good times!

Oh, and the afterparty is ALWAYS ... um ... well ... pretty crazy. :)

So ... quit your excuses folks ... come check us out this weekend! You don't have to come to play, but come to watch. I must warn you though: The music will suck you in ...
