Random Thoughts from January Camp
by Lee Rudnicki
This weekend's rehearsal camp went well. Unfortunately, throwing a new drum solo, parade tune and cadence at the drum line all in one week definitely showed. The drummers need some time at home to catch up. The 2004 show, Goodbye Blue Skies, is coming together extremely well. We did three run-throughs on Saturday, put the first few sets of drill on the field on Sunday, and figured out what needs to be edited. The end of this year's show is very, very different than last year's, but hey -- we start this year's show with the end of last year's show (literally), so it's all good.
Joey Pero, the ultra-talented soprano soloist from the Empire Statesmen, came out to San Francisco to hear the parade tune that he wrote for the corps (Lucretia McEvil). When I asked him what he thought of our field show, he simply said "profound."
To me, the interesting thing about our 2004 show is that it is very much in your face, but it combines some musical genres in such a way that have not been seen on a football field before (European trance music & jazz, etc.). We opened the door with the music from the Matrix last year, but this show basically kicks that door down. In two weeks, the Renegades will be on TV performing in the Chinese New Years parade in downtown San Francisco. Should be fun.
A Few days after camp, and I am still baffled that the 2004 horn line is so much better than last year. I mean, it ain't even close. What the hell happened? It's only February ... errr ... January. Stop the madness.
