Founded in 2000, Renegade Taiko (RT) is a new and innovative component of the Renegades Association of California. Rooted in taiko, or Japanese drums, RT’s charter is to establish a taiko group that not only encompasses traditional and contemporary taiko drumming, but also incorporates evolutionary concepts in drumming, marching percussion, music, and performance.

Renegade Taiko is comprised largely of existing performing members of the Renegades Drum and Bugle Corps, although membership is open to anyone with an interest in taiko and drumming. The director of RT is Kevin Mukai, who has spent over 9 years as a performing member with the world renowned San Jose Taiko.

Renegade Taiko made its debut performance on April 1, 2001 at the second annual LOUD Music Symposium. Additional performances are planned throughout the year, including the upcoming Renegades Memorabilia Madness II auction fundraiser on May 18.
